ENGAGING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

The Storrington Community Partnership is concerned with bringing young people into volunteering opportunities, and we are aware that the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is one well coordinated route to achieve this.

There are a number of voluntary groups in Storrington which may well be appropriate, and indeed may have already hosted DofE young people.

We would like to take this forward to develop this opportunity for young people in the Storrington area.

The Project & Objectives

The volunteer Member, acting as a Project Officer, should be...

• keen to discover how the communication channels work for voluntary groups,
• discover what skills a young person may gain as a result, and
• be prepared to meet with Secondary school staff, the DofE coordinator for Chichester, and voluntary groups to explore the details.

Their role objectives would be to

• enable local groups to equip themselves to receive and encourage young people placed with them
• prepare a list of suitable groups for the School or DofE coordinator to use for reference
• create a process in which the outcome is a positive experience for both the young person and the voluntary group.
  

What skills do I need?

• A self starter with good organisation skills who likes to get things done.
• Comfortable and confident with approaching local voluntary groups.
• Good written & verbal communication
• An SCP Trustee would act as mentor and adviser throughout.
