Volunteer mentors work on a one-to-one basis with ex-offenders before release, on the day of release itself, and during the challenging period re-adapting to independent living.
The work involves preparatory meetings in Lewes prison during the 6-12 weeks before release, some preparatory work with agencies (eg Housing, Probation etc), a full day accompanying the mentee "Through the Gate" on his day of release, then short weekly meetings in the community thereafter.
The work involves pre-release meetings in Lewes Prison, then weekly meetings in the community local to the mentor/ mentee.
Volunteer mentors come from many different backgrounds. We look for commitment and resilience, empathy, maturity, flexibility and the ability to encourage, motivate and support individuals in making positive life choices. Training, safe management and personal development of our volunteers is a major priority and commitment for Sussex Pathways. Our volunteers are DBS screened.
You might have had experience coaching, managing, parenting, encouraging or leading personal change. Or you might feel you have these skills and want the opportunity to apply them where they are really needed and valued.
Some knowledge and experience of the criminal justice system and / or community services might be useful, but what is really important is a comittment to working with the disadvantaged in challenging circumstances.
