This role provides a unique and engaging experience for patients and visitors. The volunteer is responsible for playing our grand piano, or an instrument of their choice agreed with the Hospice in advance. In addition, fulfilling requests where appropriate.

Role responsibilities:

  • Play suitable music, with a particular focus on music to help relaxation.
  • Fulfil requests from patients and loved ones as requested.
  • Discuss any queries, problems or observations with your manager.
  • Adhere to our Volunteering Code of Conduct at all times.
  • Attend relevant meetings & undertake all training required.
  • Act as an ambassador for St Catherine's at all times.

Training Provided:

An induction will be provided for most roles.

If you are accessing the ward, or volunteering weekly, you will need to undertake our Hospice Volunteer Welcome Day Training session in order to begin your role, as well as relevant refresher courses. You will also need to undertake e-learning modules annually. We also offer extra training courses to support your personal development.

What skills do I need?

What we're looking for:

  • Good musical ability.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Be flexible and willing to follow instructions and requests.
  • Minimum age 16 years (parent/guardian consent and child employment permit may be required).
  • Being sociable, cheerful and courteous.
  • A caring approach.
  • Commitment to undertake any requested training.
  • Have an understanding of Hospice care and philosophy and the ability to contribute to it.
  • Ideally able to give one session a week.
  • No criminal record check is required for this role (unless your role requires accessing the ward, then a Standard DBS Check will be required).
